Aquatics Assessment

If you've heard that the pool might close in 1-2 years (which many of us have), you may be wondering why the city is investing in pool repairs?  Well... the situation is a bit more nuanced, and potentially favorable, than we originally thought.

It's true that funding to improve Warwick pool is not in Alexandria's Capital Improvement Budget.  We recently learned that this is because Alexandria has no long-term plan or strategy for its aquatics facilities.  City leaders were understandably reticent to "throw money" at repairs without a longer-term strategy.

The city hired a team of independent consultants who are conducting an Aquatics Assessment and developing a "Master Plan" for Alexandria aquatics.  We hope that Warwick pool improvements will be part of that Plan, and will communicate that to the city during a stakeholder meeting on May 4th.

Because the Master Plan will be completed after this year’s city budget cycle, it is unlikely that any major funding will be included in the FY12 budget.  But that doesn't mean we should sit back and relax.  We need to start applying pressure NOW to ensure that aquatics funding, and funding for Warwick pool, are restored in future budgets!

Please email the Mayor and City Council today to express your support of public pools for Alexandria, and Warwick Pool in particular!
